Which first aid course do I need for my workplace?
It depends on your workplace risk assessment. The Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 require every employer to provide adequate first aid provision, but they don't prescribe a specific course.
The level you need follows from the risks in your workplace.
In practice, most low risk workplaces choose Emergency First Aid at Work (one day).
High risk workplaces choose First Aid at Work (three days).
Ofsted registered childcare settings need Paediatric First Aid, which is a separate requirement under the EYFS statutory framework.
How long is the Emergency First Aid at Work course?
One day. It's a Level 3 qualification (upon Ofqual upgrade request), and the certificate lasts three years from the course date.
You'll cover CPR and defibrillator use, choking, severe bleeding, shock, and how to manage someone who's unresponsive.
It suits offices, retail, hospitality, and the media and creative businesses around MediaCityUK.
Workplaces where the likely emergencies are medical rather than injuries from equipment.
How long is the First Aid at Work course?
Three days. Also a Level 3 qualification, valid for three years.
FAW covers everything in EFAW and adds fractures, head and spinal injuries, chest injuries, and the management of conditions like diabetes, epilepsy, asthma, and anaphylaxis.
It's the qualification most Trafford Park manufacturing and logistics employers choose, along with construction firms working across Salford and Old Trafford.
If you already hold FAW and it's approaching expiry, the two day Requalification course renews it.
Book before your certificate expires. HSE guidance does not allow late requalification.
Does your Paediatric First Aid course meet EYFS requirements?
Yes. Our Blended Paediatric First Aid course is built around Annex A of the Early Years Foundation Stage statutory framework, which is the standard Ofsted registered early years providers are held to.
The course runs for 12 hours total: around six hours online at your own pace, then a six hour classroom day at the venue.
It covers infant and child CPR, choking, anaphylaxis and auto injector use, asthma, seizures, and recognising a seriously unwell child.
Nursery staff, childminders, school staff, nannies and parents all attend.
Note: EYFS framework requirements are reviewed periodically. Content confirmed against the framework in force as of 1 September 2026.
What other courses run at Salford Quays?
Alongside the regulated first aid qualifications, we deliver:
For fire wardens, fire marshals, and designated responsible persons. Covers prevention, evacuation, extinguisher use, and duties under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.
Suitable for warehouse, logistics, retail, hospitality and office settings.
How quickly will I get my certificate?
Within 48 hours of passing the course.
Assessment is continuous and practical. There's no written exam to wait for.
Once your trainer confirms you've met the standard, the certificate is processed and sent out.
Across 80,000 delegates certified since 2012, our first time pass rate is 99%.
Can you come to our workplace instead?
Yes, for teams of six or more. We bring the trainer, manikins, training defibrillators and all course materials to your premises.
Onsite training across Salford, Trafford, Eccles, Old Trafford and central Manchester avoids the travel time and lost hours of sending staff to a venue.
Sessions can be split across two visits if shift patterns make a full day difficult.
Who teaches the courses?
Most of our trainers come from NHS ambulance, paramedic and emergency care backgrounds.
Safe Haven Training was founded in 2012 by Ian Bryan, a former NHS paramedic. Group sizes at this venue are capped at 12, so every delegate gets hands-on time on the manikins and defibrillator rather than watching from the back of a room.
