Course Details

Level 1 Fire Safety Awareness

It is a half day course for everyone on your payroll. It covers what to do on discovering a fire, what to do when the alarm sounds, how to leave the building and where the extinguishers are. It runs at your premises for up to 12 people at £325+VAT per group. Each delegate receives a Safe Haven Training certificate valid for three years.

 

Who needs fire safety awareness training?

Every employee. The Fire Safety Order requires the responsible person to train all staff when they start work and to repeat the training periodically (Legislation.gov.uk). The 2023 Home Office guide says recognised practice is no less often than annually (Home Office). This course is the way most employers meet that duty for the whole workforce at once.

    Short multiple choice paper, marked on the day. Extra support on the day, at no charge, for anyone who needs it.

Course Requirements
  • No prior fire safety knowledge needed
  • Minimum age 14 years
  • Comfortable clothing recommended
  • A smartphone or tablet is required to scan QR codes for the test

Why fires start and spread at work

  • The fire triangle, and the ignition sources in an ordinary workplace
  • The most common causes in offices, shops and workshops
  • Convection, and why smoke fills a room from the top down
  • Why fire doors are kept shut and never wedged
  • Why lifts are not used

Everyday prevention

  • Housekeeping, storage and waste
  • Portable appliances and close down checks
  • Near misses: scorch marks, warm plugs, overloaded sockets
  • Reporting what you notice, and to whom

What the law asks of you as an employee

  • Who the responsible person is and what they must provide
  • Your duty to cooperate and to do nothing that puts others at risk
  • Who your fire marshals are and what they will ask you to do

What to do in a fire

  • Raising the alarm, where the call points are, and what to tell 999
  • When to close a door and leave
  • Leaving by the nearest exit, not the usual one, and not stopping for belongings
  • The assembly point, the roll call and not going back in
  • The extinguisher and fire blanket types you will see, their colour bands and where they are
  • How they work, and when to walk away instead
