Freelance training works best when the bookings are steady, and the admin is not your problem. That is the part we take seriously.
Safe Haven Training was founded in 2012 by Ian Bryan, a former NHS paramedic who still shapes how our courses are delivered. Since then, we have trained more than 80,000 professionals across the UK. We deliver at over 95 venues and on client premises, from nurseries and care homes to construction sites and corporate offices.
We are always glad to hear from experienced trainers who want regular work with a provider that respects the craft.
If you hold qualifications across several subjects, all the better. We are expanding, and trainers with broader coverage pick up more days and earn more as a result.
The role
You deliver accredited first aid courses to groups of up to twelve learners, using our lesson plans, presentations and materials.
Most days are single course days at a venue or a client's own site.
Beyond that, the role involves:
- Running practical assessments and supporting every learner to reach the standard
- Setting up the room, deploying equipment safely and packing down afterwards
- Submitting course results digitally at the end of the day, in one go
- Representing Safe Haven professionally with clients, venues and learners
Our courses include Emergency First Aid at Work, First Aid at Work and requalification, Blended Paediatric First Aid, Fire Safety Awareness, Fire Marshal and Manual Handling.
You are welcome to deliver only the subjects you are qualified and confident to teach.
How the work runs
The role is freelance and self employed, so you keep control of your diary. You tell us your availability and the area you are happy to cover, and we book around it.
You can be based anywhere in the UK. You do need a full driving licence and reliable transport, as venues and client sites vary week to week.
Weekend availability is welcome rather than compulsory, and Saturdays tend to be the busiest days in most regions.
What you will need
We ask for the following, and we check certificates before your first booking.
Qualifications
- A current, in date Ofqual regulated First Aid at Work or Paediatric First Aid qualification, with certificate
- A teaching or training qualification with certificate, such as Level 3 in Education and Training, PTLLS or equivalent
- Current certificates for any additional subjects you are qualified to teach, such as Fire Safety, Manual Handling or First Aid for Mental Health
- A current enhanced DBS certificate
Equipment
- CPR manikins: three adult, three child and three baby, ideally mixed skin tones, clean and in good condition
- Auto Injector trainers
- Choking Vest
- At least one full size automated external defibrillator for demonstration and practice
- Three mini automated external defibrillators for learner practice
- Life Threatening/Catastrophic Bleed Control Kit including Torniquets
- A selection of wound dressings, triangular bandages and conforming bandages, sufficient for up to twelve delegates
- A working laptop and projector
What we look for beyond the certificates
Qualifications get you through the door. What makes a course work is the person delivering it.
A room of twelve learners on a Monday morning is rarely uniform.
Some are there because their employer sent them, some are nervous about the practical elements, and one or two will have done the course three times before.
The trainers our clients ask for by name are the ones who read that room and adjust. In practice, that means:
- Explaining clearly without talking down to people, whatever their background
- Drawing in the quiet learner who would rather watch than kneel down beside a manikin
- Using real examples to make chest compressions or anaphylaxis feel relevant rather than theoretical
- Keeping the day warm and steady, so people leave confident enough to actually act
Confidence is what we are really teaching. A learner who enjoyed the day is far more likely to step forward when it matters.
What we provide
You bring the delivery. We handle everything around it.
- Fully updated course materials, lesson plans and presentations, kept in line with awarding body requirements
- All learner bookings, venue arrangements and client liaison
- Digital course administration, with results entered into our system at the end of the course. Some courses also require uploading supporting paperwork, and we tell you which ones in advance.
Our courses hold a 99% pass rate. That reflects the materials you will be working from and, above all, the support you give candidates on the day.
We aim to pay the next day. Once a course is completed and your results are submitted, payment normally follows the following day.
For multi day courses such as the three day First Aid at Work, payment follows completion of the full course rather than each day.
