Leeds railway station is a short bus or taxi ride away, with direct trains from Bradford, Wakefield, York, Huddersfield and Sheffield. Driving in, the venue is reached from the A58, A65 or M621.

What is the emergency first aid at work course in Leeds?

Emergency First Aid at Work, usually shortened to EFAW, is a one day course and one of the two building blocks of workplace first aid training recognised by HSE.

It qualifies you to act as a workplace first aider. You will cover CPR, using a defibrillator, choking, severe bleeding, shock, burns, and how to look after someone who is unresponsive.

A defibrillator, or an AED, is a portable device that delivers a shock to a stopped heart.

The course suits offices, shops, hospitality and professional services, where a medical emergency is more likely than an injury from equipment.

HSE notes that while EFAW and FAW meet the needs of most businesses, employers remain free to choose whatever level of training suits their circumstances (HSE).

What certificate do I get, and how long does it last?

You receive an Emergency First Aid at Work certificate, issued within 48 hours of passing the course assessment.

It is valid for three years from the course date. Assessment happens as you go, practically, so there is no written exam result to wait on.

Once your trainer confirms you have passed both physical and practical assessments, the certificate is processed and sent out. Keep a note of the expiry date.

Requalification has to happen before the certificate runs out.

Which first aid course do I need for my workplace in Leeds?

It depends on your risk assessment.

The Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 require employers to provide adequate and appropriate equipment, facilities, and personnel so that employees receive immediate attention if injured or taken ill at work (Legislation.gov.uk).

The Regulations name no specific course. They apply to every workplace, including those with fewer than five employees, and to the self employed (HSE).

What counts as adequate depends on your circumstances, which is why HSE requires employers to carry out a first aid needs assessment (HSE).

Lower risk workplaces usually choose the one day EFAW course. Higher risk workplaces choose First Aid at Work, or FAW, which runs over three days.

Ofsted registered childcare settings need a paediatric course instead, which is a separate requirement.

The mistake we see most often is a business booking the one day course when its risk assessment points to the three day one. If you have machinery, work at height, or lone workers, ring us before you book.

How long is the First Aid at Work course?

Three days. The certificate also lasts three years.

FAW covers everything in the one-day course, then adds fractures, head and spinal injuries, chest injuries, and conditions including diabetes, epilepsy, asthma and anaphylaxis.

Manufacturing, warehousing and construction employers across West Yorkshire usually need this level.

Since 2024, HSE guidance has also asked employers to take account of employees' mental health when carrying out their first aid needs assessment (HSE).

That is worth reading alongside the mental health courses further down this page. If you already hold FAW and it is near expiry, a two day requalification course renews it.

Does your paediatric first aid course meet Ofsted requirements?

Yes. It is built around Annex A of the Early Years Foundation Stage statutory framework, the section setting out what a full paediatric first aid course must cover.

The framework requires at least one person holding a current paediatric first aid certificate to be on the premises and available whenever children are present, and to accompany children on outings.

The certificate must come from a full course consistent with Annex A, and must be renewed every three years (DfE).

The course runs for 12 hours in total. Around six hours are completed online at your own pace, then a six hour classrooml day at the Leeds venue.

Content covers infant and child CPR, choking, anaphylaxis and auto injector use, asthma, seizures, head injuries, and spotting a child who is seriously unwell.

One change worth knowing about.

Since 1 September 2025, students, long term volunteers aged 17 or over, and apprentices aged 16 or over must hold a valid paediatric first aid certificate to be counted in staff to child ratios (DfE).

Settings that previously treated this as optional now need to plan for it.

Do you run baby first aid classes in Leeds for parents?

Yes, our paediatric first aid course covers baby first aid training and you do not need to work in childcare to attend.

Parents, grandparents, nannies and other family members book with us regularly.

The skills are the same ones nursery staff learn, taught the same way.

Infant and child CPR, which differs from adult CPR in both technique and compression depth.

Choking, including what to do differently for a baby under one year.

Most parents book because of one specific worry, usually choking or a baby who has stopped breathing.

Those are the sections people ask the most questions about, and there is time on the day to work through them properly on the manikins.

No prior experience is needed.

Do you teach forestry first aid?

Yes. Forestry first aid is the extended course for people using chainsaws or working in woodland, where an ambulance may be a long way off.

It adds life threatening bleeding and remote casualty management to standard workplace content.

What else runs at the Leeds venue?

Mental health first aid. Three levels, from a Level 1 awareness award through to Level 3 for supervisors and managers.

HSE guidance since 2024 asks employers to consider employees' mental health within their first aid needs assessment (HSE).

Fire safety and fire marshal training. Covers prevention, evacuation, extinguisher use and duties under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (Legislation.gov.uk).

Manual handling. For warehouse, logistics, retail, hospitality, care and office teams.

Can you come to our workplace instead?

Yes, for groups of six or more.

We bring the trainer, the manikins, the training defibrillators and all the course materials to you.

We deliver onsite across Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield, Pontefract, Castleford, Huddersfield and the rest of West Yorkshire.

It saves your team the travel and the lost hours. Where shift patterns make a full day awkward, a course can be split across two visits.

Who teaches the courses?

Our trainers come from NHS ambulance, paramedic and emergency care backgrounds.

Safe Haven Training was founded in 2012 by Ian Bryan, a former NHS paramedic.

To be clear about what that means: our trainers have worked in the NHS, but Safe Haven is an independent training provider and not part of the NHS.

Our courses are accredited through FAIB. What the NHS background gives you is someone teaching from real emergencies rather than from a manual.

Are your Leeds courses accredited?

Yes. Courses are accredited by FAIB, the First Aid Industry Body, as standard.

Ofqual regulated qualifications are available through Qualsafe Awards on request.

One point that causes confusion. HSE has not approved first aid training providers since the 2013 amendment to regulation 3(2) of the 1981 Regulations, so no provider can accurately describe itself as HSE approved (HSE).

What HSE does instead is set out guidance to help employers choose a provider, and our workplace course content is built to align with it.

Paediatric content aligns with EYFS Annex A. Resuscitation content follows the 2025 Resuscitation Council UK guidelines.
