Paediatric First Aid for Nurseries & Childminders (EYFS Requirements)
If you run a nursery, pre school or work as a childminder in the UK, paediatric first aid is not optional. It is a legal requirement under the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)1.
This page explains:
- Paediatric first aid requirements for childminders and nurseries
- Renewal rules and refresher guidance
- How to choose a compliant training provider
Is Paediatric First Aid Mandatory?
Yes.
Under EYFS:
- Childminders must hold a valid Paediatric First Aid (PFA) certificate to register and must maintain it at all times.
- Training must meet Annex A criteria.
- Certification must be renewed every three years.
In all early years settings:
- At least one person with a current PFA certificate must be present at all times when children are on site.
- A qualified paediatric first aider must accompany children on outings.
- Certificates must be available to parents on request.
Staffing levels, number of children and premises layout should be considered to ensure rapid emergency response.
Our 12 hour Level 3 Blended Paediatric First Aid Course is the most popular choice with nurseries and childminders.
EYFS Annex A Requirements
To be compliant, Paediatric First Aid training must:
- Be designed for those caring for babies and young children
- Include assessment leading to certification
- Be renewed every three years
- Include baby and junior resuscitation mannequins
- Deliver emergency elements face to face (online only courses are not sufficient)

Do You Need Refresher Training?
Although certification lasts three years, EYFS advises considering annual refresher training to maintain skills and stay up to date with best practice.
Choosing a Compliant Training Provider
Childminders and nurseries must select a competent provider. You may wish to consider:
- FAIB certified and Ofqual regulated qualifications
- Providers linked to recognised trade bodies
- Training aligned with HSE guidance
Choosing an accredited provider like Safe Haven Training helps ensure your certification meets Ofsted expectations.
