Logistics sites carry a distinct injury pattern. Vehicles and pedestrians share the same ground, loads move at height, and manual handling runs through every shift of the operation.

Workplace transport incidents, being struck by moving objects and manual handling injuries account for most of what happens on a distribution site, and the same duty applies whether you run one unit or a national network (HSE).

Is first aid training a legal requirement for a warehouse?

Yes. Every employer must provide adequate and appropriate first aid equipment, facilities and personnel, with no minimum staff threshold, under the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 (Legislation.gov.uk).

A single depot employing four people carries the same duty as a distribution centre employing four hundred. What counts as adequate is set by your own first aid needs assessment.

HSE publishes no ratio, and the numbers circulating online come from its guidance as suggestions rather than thresholds (HSE).
 

Why is warehousing treated as a high risk environment?

Because the hazards present are the ones that produce serious injury. Rider operated lift trucks, reversing vehicles, loading bay edges, racking, cages and heavy repeated lifting all sit in the same space, often under time pressure.

HSE recorded 126 worker fatalities in Great Britain during 2025/26, and workplace transport incidents remain one of the leading causes across all sectors (HSE).

Falls from height are the single largest cause, which on a logistics site means racking, trailer beds and mezzanine edges rather than scaffolding.

That risk profile matters for training, because a high risk site generally calls for First Aid at Work over three consecutive days rather than the one day course.
 

Which regulations sit alongside the first aid duty?

Four, and they shape what your first aiders are likely to be treating.
 

• Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 require you to avoid hazardous manual handling where reasonably practicable, assess what cannot be avoided, and reduce the risk (Legislation.gov.uk).
• Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 cover the safe use of trucks, conveyors and mechanical handling equipment.
• Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 cover lifting equipment, including thorough examination.
• RIDDOR 2013 requires reporting of fatal and specified injuries, and of injuries causing more than seven days' incapacity.
   

Manual handling is the one that turns up in the first aid room. Training the team to lift correctly and training people to treat the injury are two different jobs, and most operations need both.

How do you cover a 24 hour operation?

Cover has to hold on every working pattern, not on the day shift alone. A first aider on days does not cover a night trunking operation, and a site running around the clock needs trained people spread across all of it.

Absence is the second half of the problem. Annual leave, sickness and turnover all remove cover, so the practical minimum for continuous provision is usually more than the number your assessment produces on paper.
 

Can training be delivered at your site?

Yes. We deliver in house training at warehouses and distribution centres across the UK, priced per group rather than per delegate for up to 12 delegates. Onsite delivery has a practical advantage in logistics.

Staff train in the building they work in, so the discussion covers your own loading bays, racking layout and defibrillator location rather than a generic site. Multi-site operators use the open course schedule differently.

With 95+ venues and 200+ trainers, teams in several regions train on comparable dates without appointing a different provider in each.

 

How long do certificates last?

Three years, for both Emergency First Aid at Work and First Aid at Work.

A lapsed certificate covers nobody from the day it expires. First Aid at Work holders can requalify over two days rather than repeating the full three, provided the existing certificate has not already expired. Diary the date at the point of booking.
