First Aid Requirements for Gyms and Fitness Settings in the UK
Gyms are high energy environments where members push their bodies hard. Incidents can happen at any time, from a sprained ankle on the gym floor to a sudden cardiac event mid workout.
Under the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981, every UK gym has a legal duty to provide adequate first aid for its staff (Legislation.gov.uk, 1981). The HSE also strongly recommends including members and visitors in your first aid needs assessment (HSE, 2025).
Safe Haven Training delivers first aid courses for gym owners, personal trainers, group fitness instructors and reception teams across the UK.
Our courses are FAIB certified as standard, with Ofqual regulated qualifications available on request.
Why First Aid Training Is Important in Gym Settings
Gym environments come with their own risks. Common incidents include:
- Sudden cardiac arrest during or after exercise
- Fainting, dizziness or low blood sugar
- Asthma attacks and breathing difficulties
- Sprains, strains and fractures
- Cuts from equipment or weights
- Heat exhaustion and dehydration
- Falls from cardio machines or in group classes
A trained first aider can act quickly while emergency services are on their way. In cardiac arrest cases, every minute without CPR or defibrillation reduces the chance of survival.
What the Law Says
The Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 apply to every UK workplace, including gyms, fitness studios and leisure centres (HSE, 2025).
Under Regulation 3, every employer must:
- Provide adequate and appropriate first aid equipment and facilities
- Ensure suitable trained people are available to give first aid to employees if they are injured or become ill at work (Legislation.gov.uk, 1981)
- The regulations apply to all workplaces, including those with fewer than five employees and to self employed personal trainers working from their own studios (HSE, 2025).
Although the law focuses on employees, the HSE strongly recommends including members and visitors in your first aid needs assessment (HSE, 2025). In a member facing environment like a gym, that recommendation is hard to ignore in practice.
Recommended First Aid Courses for Gym Staff
For most gym environments, the Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course is a strong starting point.
It covers the core skills needed to respond to most incidents on the gym floor or in a class.
Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW)
This 1 day course teaches gym staff how to:
- Assess emergency situations safely
- Perform CPR and use an AED (defibrillator)
- Help someone who is choking
- Place a casualty in the recovery position
- Control bleeding and treat minor injuries
- Recognise signs of shock and respond to seizures
The certificate is valid for three years.
For larger gyms or higher risk settings such as CrossFit boxes, weightlifting clubs or climbing centres, the First Aid at Work (FAW) 3 day course gives a broader range of skills.
This includes head, spinal and chest injuries, fractures and a wider range of medical conditions.
Who Should Take First Aid Training in a Gym?
First aid training is relevant to anyone working in a gym or fitness environment, including:
- Personal trainers
- Group fitness instructors
- Gym floor staff
- Reception and front of house teams
- Duty managers
- Self employed coaches and freelancers
- Owners of independent gyms and studios
For personal trainers in particular, the National Careers Service notes that "it's usual to have a certificate in first aid that includes cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR)" as part of working in the role (National Careers Service, 2026).
The Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) is the recognised professional body for the UK fitness industry, and many employers and insurance providers expect evidence of first aid training before you start work.
The Emergency First Aid at Work course covers CPR and is widely accepted as suitable for personal trainers and fitness instructors.
AED Training and Sudden Cardiac Arrest
Sudden cardiac arrest is a recognised risk in any setting where people are exercising at intensity.
The use of an AED in the first few minutes can be the difference between life and death.
Many UK gyms now have an AED on site as part of their safety provision.
Safe Haven Training offers the Level 2 Basic Life Support & Automated External Defibrillator course, which focuses specifically on CPR and defibrillator skills.
This is a half day course, and a strong addition for gym teams who want their staff confident using an AED.

- Many gym insurance providers expect up to date certification
- Records should be kept alongside other staff training documents
