What the Law Says About First Aid in Retail
Retail businesses are workplaces.
The Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 apply to every UK retailer, from single store independents to multisite chains (HSE, 2025).
Under these regulations, every employer must:
- Carry out a first aid needs assessment
- Provide adequate first aid equipment and facilities
- Ensure enough trained staff are available to give first aid to employees who are injured or unwell at work
Although the law focuses on employees, the HSE strongly recommends including customers and visitors in your first aid needs assessment (HSE, 2025).
In a customer facing environment where the public are on your premises all day, that recommendation is very hard to overlook.
Why First Aid Training Matters in Retail
Retail environments carry a specific set of risks. Common incidents include:
Customer facing incidents:
- Sudden collapse or fainting on the shop floor
- Cardiac arrest during shopping
- Falls, especially on wet floors or stairs
- Choking, particularly in food adjacent retail or cafés
- Allergic reactions to product ingredients (cosmetics, food, textiles)
- Panic attacks or anxiety episodes
- Medical emergencies affecting elderly or vulnerable customers
Staff facing incidents: In every one of these situations, the response in the first few minutes really matters.
A trained first aider on shift makes the difference between a well handled incident and a serious problem.
- Cuts from stock, boxes, packaging or fixtures
- Burns from steamers, coffee machines or heat guns
- Manual handling injuries from deliveries and merchandising
- Falls from step ladders
- Slips and trips in stockrooms
- Aggressive customer incidents and assaults
First Aid Courses for Retail Teams
For most retail environments, Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) is the right starting point.
It covers the core skills needed to respond to most incidents in a store.
Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) - 1 Day
This one day course teaches retail staff how to:
- Assess emergency situations safely
- Perform CPR and use an AED (defibrillator)
- Help someone who is choking
- Place a casualty in the recovery position
- Control bleeding and treat burns
- Recognise signs of shock and respond to seizures
The certificate is valid for three years.
For larger stores, flagship venues, or higher risk retail (kitchen and food retail, DIY, sports and activity based retail), the First Aid at Work (FAW) 3 day course gives broader coverage - including fractures, head injuries and a wider range of medical conditions.
Level 2 Basic Life Support & AED - Half Day
A shorter course focused on CPR and defibrillator use. A strong fit for store managers, duty leads and anyone acting as a designated first responder.
Fire Safety Training for Retail Premises
Retail spaces have their own fire risks - stockrooms full of packaging and product, customer flow to manage during an evacuation, and often multiple exits with different levels of accessibility.
Level 1 Fire Safety Awareness - Half Day
A nationally recognised half day course covering:
- Fire risks in the workplace
- Common causes of fire
- How to use fire extinguishers safely
- Evacuation procedures The role of fire wardens
This course works well as an addition to first aid training.
It gives your team the confidence to manage both fire and medical emergencies on the same day.
For larger retail sites with more complex fire safety arrangements, we can deliver bespoke fire warden training tailored to your store layout.
Mental Health First Aid for Retail Teams
Retail staff are on the front line every day. They deal with abusive customers, shoplifting incidents, long shifts, and the constant pressure of hitting sales targets.
Retail teams have some of the highest rates of workplace stress and burnout of any UK sector.
Mental Health First Aid training gives store managers, duty leads, and HR business partners the confidence to spot the signs early and support colleagues through difficult times.
We deliver three levels:
- Level 1 Award in Awareness of First Aid for Mental Health
Foundation training for any team member
- Level 2 Award in First Aid for Mental Health
For store managers, area managers and duty leads
- Level 3 Award in Supervising First Aid for Mental Health
For HR business partners, regional managers and heads of people
Under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, employers have a duty to look after the mental as well as physical health of their staff.
Retailers who build mental health training into their L&D programmes meet that duty and support staff retention at the same time.
Delivery Options for Retail Businesses
We work with retailers of every size, and we build the training around your operating hours and staff availability.

That means:
- No travel time or downtime for your team
- Training around your opening hours - early mornings, evenings or Sundays
- Whole store teams training together
- Real world scenarios based on your actual store layout
- One trainer, one venue, one cost - simpler than sending staff to open courses

This works well for:
- Independent retailers with one or two staff to certify
- Retail chains with a small number of staff needing renewal at short notice
- Head office staff who prefer to train off site
Multisite rollouts for retail chains
For retailers with multiple stores across the UK, we build a coordinated training calendar across your estate.
This includes:
- Aligned certificate renewal dates across your stores
- Regional trainer availability so we can reach every location
- Consolidated invoicing per region or nationally
- Reporting dashboards for your central L&D team via our National Accounts page

FAQs
- Do retail staff need first aid training by law?
The Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 require every employer, including retailers, to provide adequate first aid for their employees. The HSE also recommends including customers and visitors in your needs assessment, which usually points to having trained first aiders on shift.
-
How many first aiders does a retail store need?
There is no fixed number. It depends on the size of your team, the layout of the store, the risks in your specific type of retail, and how busy the store is. Your first aid needs assessment will guide the answer.
- Which course is best for shop floor staff?
The Emergency First Aid at Work course covers the core skills needed for most retail environments. It's a one day course, valid for three years, and works well for shop floor staff, duty managers and stockroom teams.
- Can Safe Haven Training deliver at our store or HQ?
Yes. We deliver onsite training across the UK, in stores, back of house training rooms, or head office spaces. We can work around your opening hours and busy retail periods.
- Do you deliver training across multiple stores?
Yes. We work with retail chains to coordinate training across every store in their estate. Get in touch to discuss a multisite rollout.
- How quickly do certificates arrive?
Certificates are issued within 48 hours of course completion.
- Do you offer training for retail staff dealing with difficult customers?
Our Mental Health First Aid courses cover the emotional side of dealing with difficult customer interactions. For specific violence and de escalation training, we can put you in touch with specialist providers or build bespoke content into a first aid session.
