Course Details

Fire Marshal Training

It is a one day course for the people you nominate to run your fire evacuation. It is delivered at your premises for up to 12 delegates at £450+VAT per group. The day covers the marshal's six duties, the sweep and roll call, how to run a drill. Every delegate who passes receives a Safe Haven Training certificate valid for three years. 

*Live extinguisher practical training is only available upon request.

Who should attend fire marshal training?

Anyone the responsible person has nominated, or intends to nominate, to help people out of the building in a fire. In practice, that is one or two people per floor or area, plus enough deputies to cover shifts, nights, holidays and sickness. Home Office guidance says staffed premises beyond the smallest will usually need fire wardens appointed, and that they need training beyond what every employee receives.

    Multiple choice paper, marked on the day. Delegates who need more time or support get it on the day, at no charge.

What does the fire marshal course cover?

Role of Fire Marshal and how fire behaves

  • The six duties: helping people out, checking areas are clear, using equipment if safe, meeting the fire service, shutting down plant, supervising the incident
  • Where the marshal sits in the emergency plan and alongside the responsible person
  • What must be written down, and who may ask to see it
  • The fire triangle and the three ways fire spreads
  • Why smoke, not flame, kills, and how fast a corridor fills
  • How people actually behave when an alarm sounds

 

Preventing fire and routine fire marshal checks

  • Ignition sources you will find on a walk round
  • Housekeeping, storage and waste
  • Hot work, contractors and arson

  • Exits unlocked and routes clear before the building opens
  • Weekly alarm test from a different call point
