First Aid Certificate Renewal vs Full Requalification
In the UK, first aid certificates last 3 years.
To stay legally recognised as a workplace first aider, you must complete a requalification course before your certificate expires.
A refresher course helps you practise skills during those three years, but it does not renew your certificate.
This difference is one of the most common causes of confusion. So let’s make it simple.
Find the Right First Aid Renewal Course
First Aid Renewal, Requalification, and Refresher | Explained Simply
First Aid Requalification (Mandatory)
Requalification is what renews your certificate.
- Required every 3 years
- Must be completed before expiry
- Includes practical and theory assessment
- Issues a new 3 year certificate
- Required for legal workplace compliance in the UK
HSE states that if your certificate expires, you are no longer considered competent to act as a workplace first aider.
First Aid Refresher Training (Recommended)
Refresher training is not mandatory, but strongly recommended by the HSE.
- Taken during the 3 year period
- Online course
- Focuses on CPR, AED use, and core skills
- Helps prevent skill fade
- Boosts confidence in real emergencies
Think of refresher training as practice, not renewal.
Why is regular first aid training recommended in the UK?
- First aid skills decline quickly without practice
- Physical skills like CPR fade faster than theory
- Incorrect technique can reduce effectiveness
- Regular training improves confidence and outcomes
That’s why annual refresher training is strongly advised, even though certificates last three years.
Which Course Do I Need to Renew My Certificate?
Look up the course you originally took. When your first aid course certificate expires, you will need to take up the corresponding courses in order to renew your certification.
| Course You Took | Certificate Validity | Course Needed to Renew* |
|---|---|---|
| Emergency First Aid at Work (1 day) | 3 years | Full Emergency First Aid at Work |
| First Aid at Work (3 days) | 3 years | |
| Blended Paediatric First Aid (Online + Classroom) | 3 years | Full 2 Day Blended Paediatric First Aid Course |
| BLS & AED | 1 year | Full Level 2 BLS & AED |
| Fire Safety Training (All Courses) | 3 years |
Full Level 1 Fire Safety Awareness or Full Fire Marshal Training Course |
*If your certificate has already expired, you must take the full course again. If you undertook the 3 Day First Aid at Work course, you can opt for our 2 Day First Aid at Work Refresher up to 28 days of certificate expiration, after which you must take the full 3 Day First Aid at Work course.
What Happens If I Don’t Requalify on Time?
If you miss your renewal:
- You are no longer a qualified first aider
- You cannot legally act as a workplace first aider
- You’ll need to retake the full course.
There is no grace period once a first aid certificate expires. However, you have up to 28 days to register for the First Aid at Work Requalification course after the date of expiry, for a 3 day first aid at work course completed three years ago.
First Aid Refresher vs Requalification | Quick Comparison
Refresher
- Optional
- Skill practice only
- Does not renew certificate
Requalification
- Mandatory

Both have value, but only requalification keeps you legally recognised.
