Mental Health First Aid Training for UK Workplaces

mental health first aid (MHFA) UK

Do workplaces in the UK need Mental Health First Aid training?

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training is not a strict legal requirement in the UK. It does, however, sit firmly within the duty of care every employer owes to their workforce.

The Health and Safety at Work (1974) Act requires organisations to protect the health and welfare of their employees.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has been clear that this duty extends to psychological as well as physical wellbeing.

For corporate offices, multi site businesses, and larger employers, that means treating mental health as part of the workplace risk picture.

It is no longer an optional add on sitting somewhere on the wellbeing wish list. It is part of how an organisation demonstrates that it takes its people seriously.

This is why so many UK businesses now train designated staff as Mental Health First Aiders.

The role gives organisations a structured way to spot the early warning signs of distress.

Trained staff can support colleagues through difficult periods and guide them towards professional help where needed.

Safe Haven Training delivers Mental Health First Aid courses at all three accredited levels for corporate clients across the UK.

Sessions run at our nationwide venues, online via Zoom, or onsite at your own premises.

The cost of poor mental health to UK business

Mental ill health is one of the biggest drivers of workplace absence in the UK today. The HSE reports that work related stress, depression or anxiety affects hundreds of thousands of UK workers each year.

Together these account for millions of working days lost annually, making mental health the single largest cause of work related ill health in Britain (HSE, 2024).

The financial picture is just as significant. Deloitte's analysis puts the cost to UK employers at around £51 billion each year (Deloitte, 2024).

The drivers are familiar - absence, presenteeism, and the cost of replacing staff who leave.

For a larger employer, even a small reduction in absence days can translate into meaningful savings.

That is before considering the benefits of stronger retention, engagement, and team morale.

Training a network of Mental Health First Aiders is one of the most practical responses available.

Where Mental Health First Aid sits in your duty of care

Every UK employer has a legal duty to protect the health, safety and welfare of their staff so far as is reasonably practicable.

This duty is set out in the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974. The HSE has confirmed that it covers psychological wellbeing alongside physical safety.

There is no specific legal requirement to appoint a Mental Health First Aider.

However, the HSE recommends that employers consider mental health as part of their first aid needs assessment.

The same guidance encourages organisations to think about the mental wellbeing of their workforce when planning their wider first aid provision.

For corporate employers, this creates a clear expectation rather than a strict mandate.

Trained Mental Health First Aiders are one of the most visible ways to show that an organisation has thought carefully about its duty of care.

That is particularly relevant in sectors with high stress levels, frontline pressure, or significant safeguarding responsibilities.

This content reflects current HSE guidance and is not legal advice.

Employers should refer to official HSE resources for definitive information on their obligations.

What does a Mental Health First Aider actually do?

A Mental Health First Aider is not a therapist, a counsellor, or a clinical professional. The role focuses on early intervention and support, not diagnosis or treatment.

Trained First Aiders learn to recognise the early signs of conditions such as anxiety, depression, stress and burnout.

They are taught how to start a supportive conversation, listen without judgement, and offer calm reassurance.

Where appropriate, they guide the person towards professional help a GP, an employee assistance programme, or a specialist service.

In a corporate setting, this often means being the calm, confident first point of contact when a colleague is in difficulty.

The role complements the work of HR, occupational health, and external clinical services. It does not replace any of them.
