Venue Requirements for Onsite First Aid Training in the UK

trainer teaching in onsite first aid training venue

If you're booking onsite or in-house first aid training, having the right room setup is essential.

The short answer?

You need enough space for delegates to sit comfortably, move safely, and complete practical CPR and casualty exercises. Plus basic facilities like power, ventilation, and access for the trainer.

This guide explains exactly what your venue needs to ensure your training runs smoothly, safely, and in line with UK standards.

What Space Is Required for First Aid Training?

First aid training is practical. Delegates don’t just sit and listen, they kneel, practise CPR, work in pairs, and complete scenario based exercises.

Your room must:

  • Seat one chair per delegate
  • Provide clear floor space for practical activities
  • Allow trainers to move freely to observe assessments

As a general guide:

  • Allow at least 1 square metre per person
  • For CPR practice, ensure enough space for two delegates to work side by side comfortably
  • Ideally, allow the space of a double bed area per two delegates for practical tasks

A cramped room affects safety, assessment quality, and learning outcomes.

Minimum Room Size for CPR and Practical Assessments

For courses like:

Delegates must practise:

  • CPR on the floor
  • Recovery position
  • Casualty assessment
  • Choking response
  • Scenario based emergencies

Your floor should be:

  • Carpeted or
  • Have cushioned mats available

Hard flooring without mats is not suitable for extended practical work.

Seating and Writing Surface Requirements

Each delegate must have:

  • A chair
  • A surface to write on

Tables are ideal.

If tables are not available, lap desks or suitable writing boards can work.

Delegates complete theory sections, note taking, and short assessments, so writing space is essential.

Technology and Equipment Needed

To deliver a high quality course, the trainer will need:

  • At least one power socket
  • Wi-Fi access (recommended)
  • A TV, monitor, or projector
  • A clear wall or screen for presentation display

If your venue does not have a projector or screen, please let us know in advance. We can bring suitable equipment if required.

Safe Haven provides:

  • Manikins
  • AED training devices
  • Course materials
  • All practical equipment

You do not need to provide first aid training equipment.

Parking, Access and Setup Time

Trainer access is very important.

Your venue must allow:

  • Access 20 minutes before and after the course start and finish time, respectively.

This allows time for:

  • Equipment setup
  • Technology checks
  • Room arrangement
  • Safe pack down

Parking requirements:

  • Safe parking near the venue
  • Space to unload training equipment
  • Clear instructions if no onsite parking is available

Without suitable access, course delivery may be delayed.

Additional Requirements for First Aid at Work Courses

For longer or regulated courses such as the 3 Day First Aid at Work course, your venue must also:

  • Be quiet and free from interruptions
  • Have adequate heating or cooling
  • Provide toilet facilities nearby
  • Allow uninterrupted attendance (full contact hours required)

Delegates must not be interrupted during training sessions.

Accessibility Considerations

Your venue should:

  • Be accessible where possible
  • Provide step free access or lift access if available

If any delegates have additional needs, inform us in advance. We are committed to inclusive, fair training delivery.
