Do I Need Any Prior Knowledge Before Attending a First Aid Course?

Do I need a prior first aid knowledge before training

No, you do not need any prior knowledge or experience before attending a first aid course.

UK first aid training is designed for complete beginners, and all essential skills are taught step by step by a competent training provider.

Whether you’re attending Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW), First Aid at Work (FAW), or Paediatric First Aid, you’ll be guided from the basics through to practical, hands on scenarios.

Why people worry about prior knowledge

It’s completely normal to feel unsure before your first course. Many learners worry that they’ll be expected to:

  • Know medical terminology
  • Have previous healthcare experience
  • Perform perfectly under pressure

The reality is very different.

First aid training in the UK is designed to build confidence, not test existing knowledge.

What the HSE says about first aid training

According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), employers must decide what level of first aid training is needed based on a first aid needs assessment, not on the learner’s background or experience.

The HSE clearly states that first aiders are trained by a competent training provider in:

  • Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) - for immediate, life saving first aid
  • First Aid at Work (FAW) - covering a wider range of injuries and illnesses

There is no requirement for learners to have existing first aid knowledge before attending either course.

Check out HSE's page to find out more.

Are first aid courses suitable for beginners?

Yes, absolutely.

First aid courses are structured to be:

  • Clear and easy to follow
  • Practical rather than academic
  • Supportive and inclusive

You’ll learn through:

  • Tutor led demonstrations
  • Hands on practice
  • Realistic scenarios
  • Simple explanations (no jargon)

By the end of the course, learners who started with zero experience are fully capable of responding in an emergency.

What you’ll be taught (from scratch)

Regardless of the course level, training always starts at the beginning.

You’ll be shown how to:

  • Assess an incident safely
  • Call for help and manage a scene
  • Perform CPR correctly
  • Use a defibrillator (AED)
  • Help someone who is choking
  • Manage bleeding, shock, and unconscious casualties

You are not expected to know any of this beforehand.

What if I work in security or need SIA training?

If you’re working towards an SIA licence, your Emergency First Aid at Work certificate is valid, provided it meets HSE requirements.

From October 2024, the SIA1 requires that EFAW training explicitly include:

  • Responding to life threatening bleeding
  • Opening and maintaining airways.

Again, no prior knowledge is required before attending the first aid course itself. Everything needed to meet SIA standards is taught and assessed during training.

What if I have a disability or need adjustments?

First aid training must be accessible.

The HSE and awarding bodies allow for reasonable adjustments, including:

  • Adjusted practical activities
  • Extra time for assessments
  • Knowledge only options where appropriate

You do not need prior knowledge, and you won’t be excluded because of physical or learning needs.

Who delivers first aid training in the UK?

The HSE does not approve or recommend individual providers (except offshore specialists). Instead, employers must choose a competent training provider who meets HSE standards.

Training providers may:

  • Deliver regulated qualifications (OFQUAL, SQA, Qualifications Wales)
  • Operate under voluntary accreditation schemes
  • Operate independently, provided competence and quality assurance are proven
  • Be one of the recognised Voluntary Aid Societies

Where Safe Haven Training fits in

Safe Haven Training operates as a competent, nationwide first aid training provider, fully aligned with HSE guidance.

The bottom line

You do not need any prior knowledge before attending a first aid course.

If you can:

  • Listen
  • Practise

You can learn first aid.
